Four friends, one evening: co-op that actually works
Games built for exactly four people — no fifth wheel, no empty slot, no compromises.

Four is the magic number of co-op. It fills a voice channel without talking over itself, splits into pairs when a plan needs two parts, and matches the player cap of half the genre's best games. If your group is a stable quartet, you are the exact audience most co-op designers build for.
The problem is that "supports 4 players" and "built for 4 players" are different claims. Plenty of games technically fit four and actually shine with two. This list only includes games where the fourth person makes the game better.
The investigator: Phasmophobia
Four roles emerge naturally — van operator, camera runner, evidence gatherer, bait. The game never assigns them; your group discovers them, which is exactly why it works.

The campaign: Valheim
The best base-building split in co-op: builders build, hunters hunt, sailors get lost. A four-person Valheim server develops division of labour by day three and a civic identity by day ten.

The referee-free party: Among Us
Technically better with more, but four-person lobbies with two impostors turn it into a pure psychology exercise — every accusation is a coin flip with table stakes of friendship.
The victory lap: Portal 2 in pairs
The co-op campaign is two-player, so run it as a relay: one pair solves, the other pair heckles, swap chambers. It's the cheapest four-person evening in gaming and somehow nobody thinks of it.
A good four-player game doesn't need a fourth player. It needs a reason the fourth player matters.
